WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

How each month's rite is carried out

  1. 01

    Checkout is followed by a private form: your own name and birth details, the name this is being carried for if it is not you, and how you want the written record to reach you.

  2. 02

    We rule a plain wooden tablet and write the names onto it by hand in vermilion, and it stands at the study altar until the day of the rite.

  3. 03

    On the ceremony date the tablet is carried before Wenchang Dijun, the Emperor of Literature, the petition is read aloud name by name, and divination blocks are cast to confirm it has been received.

  4. 04

    The gold goes into the furnace of an allied temple in Taiwan first and the petition sheets last, one at a time, so the courtesy is paid before the names are sent and no name goes up in a handful with strangers.

THE ALTAR TABLE

What is laid out on the day.

  • Three cups of clear teaWenchang is served tea and never wine, since nothing that clouds a head belongs on this table.
  • Celery, roots and leaves left onThe word for celery carries the sound of the word for diligence, and the custom is to offer it whole, roots and all, so that the diligence is not cut short.
  • Spring onion, washed and unbrokenIts name sounds like the word for clever, and it is laid down with the green left long, because nobody trims the thing they have come to ask for.
  • One head of garlicThe name sounds like the verb to reckon, and it is set down for every calculation the year is going to ask for.
  • Longan, still in the shellIts name carries the word for cassia, and the old phrase for coming first in the examinations was to pluck a cassia branch in the moon palace, so the fruit is laid down unopened.
  • Scholar's cake, cut into squaresA plain steamed rice cake named for the candidate who placed first in the old imperial examinations, and the plainest way a household knows to say what it hopes for.
  • A new writing brush, never dippedIt is laid at the foot of the tablet and left dry, standing in for the pen the student will actually hold.

If you would like something to do on the day, do one honest hour of the work. It is nearer the point than anything else we could suggest, and it is the only thing on this page you can do at your own desk. None of this is required, and nothing at the altar depends on it.

PREPARED FOR THE RITE

The same goods are prepared at every tier.

  • Wenchang gold — the sheet kept for the Emperor of Literature, folded in threes and burned once the board has been read
  • Fortune gold — the small square burned at the door, the courtesy paid before anything at all is asked inside
  • Longevity gold — the sheet kept for a god still among the living rather than an ancestor, burned once the petitions have been read
  • The study petition — written out by hand, carrying every name on the board with its birth date and the city that person lives in
  • Cassia-branch paper — the branch plucked in the moon palace in the old story about placing first, printed and folded for the board
  • Vermilion cinnabar, ground fresh on the morning the tablet is written, and one brush kept for this rite and nothing else
WHAT YOU RECEIVE

What comes back after the rite

A written completion record comes back to you: which month's board your names stood on, the wording read over them, and the day it was carried before Wenchang. It reaches you the way you asked for it — an encrypted PDF by email, opened with your own date of birth, or a message on WhatsApp. It is short, because the rite is short, and it is the part we can stand behind. No photograph comes back from this rite, at any price.

The completion record reaches you within about seven days of the ceremony date — not the day you order; register early and the board is ruled, written and stood at the altar to wait its turn. A heavy month is worked through in the order the names came in. Nothing renews on its own: when you want next month, you order next month.

  • Your own date of birth once more, because it is the password that opens the encrypted PDF. Without it nobody else can read what comes back.
