WHAT YOU RECEIVE

What comes back, and what does not

A written completion record comes back to you privately: the ceremony date, the names exactly as they stood on the tablet, and the wording of the petition read over them. The encrypted PDF is emailed to the address on your order and is also available from your private order page or member account. It opens with your own date of birth. The tablet itself does not come back; it is burned by hand at the close of the ceremony, which is what you paid for it to do, and no photograph comes back from this rite.

The completion record reaches you within about seven days of the ceremony date. Please do not go looking for it on the day itself. The rack is still full then, and nothing is written out until the last tablet has come down and been burned. If a ceremony is moved for weather or for a temple's own calendar, you are told the new date before it happens, not after.

How the tablet is written and where it stands

A private form opens once your order is paid and asks for your own name and birth details, then the living name the tablet is written for and their birth date and birthplace if you know them; a Gregorian date is enough and we convert it to the lunar calendar.

The tablet is written by hand in vermilion on red stock, the name of the rite running down the right edge and the living names down the face.

On the ceremony date the tablet is carried in and stood in the blessing rack with the rest, and the petition is read aloud in front of it, name by name, at the hour the hall has set.

It stands through the whole ceremony, and when the last chant ends it is taken down and burned by hand at the temple furnace rather than left in the rack.

Anything mailed to you. The tablet is burned at the close of the ceremony, and nothing is shipped unless we arrange it with you separately.

Your own full name, as the person placing the offering.
Your own birth date and birthplace, and the hour of birth if you happen to know it. A Gregorian date is enough and we convert it to the lunar calendar; the hour is optional and nothing here waits on it.
The living name the tablet is written for, spelled the way it should stand on the face. A name they actually answer to is better than a formal one nobody uses. If the offering is for you, you can leave it and your own name is used.
Their birth date and birthplace, if you have them. This part is optional. A name alone is enough for the tablet, and a village since renamed or swallowed by a city can be given as the nearest city today.
The completion record is emailed as an encrypted PDF to the address on your order and is also available from your private order page or member account. It opens with your own date of birth, so nobody who picks up your phone reads it by accident.

Preparation begins once your intake details are received, following the traditional liturgical calendar.
Because petitions are brushed by hand and consecrated specifically for you, changes cannot be made once ritual inscription begins.
Every tablet is inscribed by hand in vermilion ink on red paper with the living beneficiary's details; once consecrated, names cannot be altered.
The tablet stands in the blessing hall for the full ceremony before being respectfully delivered to sacred fire at the temple furnace.

What is laid out on the day.

Three cups of clear teaFilled to the same height, none fuller than another, because nobody named on this tablet is being asked for ahead of anybody else.
Five whole fruits, an odd countWhole and uncut, counted odd, because an odd count is what you set out for the living side of a house.

On the ceremony date, keep the day plain if you would like something to do with it: a meal without meat, an early night, the phone face down for a while. Some people hold the names in mind around the hour the hall opens in Taipei; others are asleep straight through it. None of this is required, and nothing at the altar depends on it.

PREPARED FOR THE RITE

Peace incense — three sticks lit and set before the reading begins, the ash left undisturbed until the ceremony closes

The Vermilion Tablet

A card of red stock, the height of a hand, written down the face in vermilion and stood upright in the blessing rack. Red is not decoration here; it is the plain mark that the person named is alive, and a tablet for the living stands up where a slip for the dead lies flat. Whether one name is on it or eight, it is one tablet in one rack, brushed by hand, carried in with the rest and read from at the hour the hall has set. For the length of the ceremony it is in the room, at eye level, in a hall where the chanting does not stop. When the last chant ends it is taken down and burned, because a blessing tablet is meant to be spent rather than kept. It is a small thing to hold in two hands, and it is still their name, in a temple in Taiwan, on a day you can write in your calendar.
