WHAT YOU RECEIVE

What is written down for you afterward

A written account of the rite comes back to you: the name exactly as it stood on the tablet, the day it stood there, the burning that followed at the allied temple, and what was folded and offered alongside it. The encrypted PDF is emailed to the address on your order and is also available from your private order page or member account. The file opens with your own date of birth, so it stays between you and this house. No photograph comes back from this rite.

If that date is still weeks out, the wait is the calendar and not us: a tablet cannot stand before the day it was written for. On the day itself the tablets are placed, read and carried to the furnace, so a message sent then may sit until evening; it will be answered.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

What is done, and who does it

  1. 01

    The form that opens after payment asks for very little: the name as it should be written, your relationship to them, and their birth details if you happen to have them.

  2. 02

    The tablet is written out by hand, the full name in black ink down the yellow paper kept for the departed, never the red used for the living, and the petition is copied beneath it in your name and the birth details you gave.

  3. 03

    On the ceremony day the tablet stands on the memorial altar before the Earth Store Bodhisattva, the offerings are set out fresh that morning, and the petition is read aloud, word by word.

  4. 04

    Afterward the paper is carried to the furnace of the allied temple and fed in by hand, unhurried, and the tablet goes in last.

  • This is remembrance, not care for the living, and it is not medical, legal or financial advice. If the grief has become more than you can carry, this rite is no substitute for the people who can help you carry it.
  • There are names on the family altar I can no longer place.
  • My grandparents left, and nothing about the generations before them came with them.
  • The graves are somewhere we cannot get to anymore.
  • I am the third generation abroad, and the line stops at whatever I happen to remember.
  • Nobody in this family has made an offering to the ancestors in thirty years.

Have these ready.

  • Your own full name and birth details, the date, the birthplace, and the time if you know it. The petition is read from you, so it has to say who is asking, and for whom.
  • The name for the memorial tablet, written the way it should appear: the full name, family name first if that is how they used it.
  • Your relationship to them, chosen from a short list, parent, grandparent, ancestor, family line, or other. It goes into the petition, and it is how the deity is told who this person was to you.
  • Their birth details, if you have them, even a year on its own. Many families do not have them, especially for a grandparent born somewhere nobody was writing it down; leave the line empty rather than guess.
  • The written account is emailed as an encrypted PDF to the address on your order and is also available from your private order page or member account. Nothing is mailed to you.
  • Your own date of birth, which becomes the password on the file, so that nobody but you opens it.

What is laid out on the day.

  • Three cups of clear teaPoured fresh and set at the front, the way you would put a cup down for someone who has just come in from a long way off.
  • A bowl of white rice, chopsticks laid flat across the rimThe chopsticks rest across the rim rather than standing upright in the rice, because upright is the shape kept for the funeral, and this table is a meal laid the way you would lay it at home.
  • Plainly cooked vegetarian dishesA deliverance rite made before the Earth Store Bodhisattva is kept meatless; nothing is killed on the day a person is being sent on.
  • Whole fruit, three kindsUnblemished and uncut, and never guava or tomato, whose seeds the old rule keeps off an altar.
  • White chrysanthemums and liliesWhite flowers, not red, because red is the color of a celebration and this is not one.
  • A pair of plain white candlesLit at the opening and left to burn down on their own, so that for as long as the name is standing there is a flame in the room that belongs to no one else.
  • A long stick of incense, replaced before it burns outThe smoke is what the petition travels on, and it is not allowed to go out while a name is standing on the altar.

On the day, if you want something to do from your own side of the world, say their name out loud once and put something of theirs where you can see it. The rite is not made weaker by a day you spent working, or a day you spent crying. None of this is required, and nothing at the altar depends on it.

  • Rebirth money, the pale sheets printed with the crossing verse, folded by hand into bundles rather than run through in a stack
  • Silver paper, large silver for the elders and small silver for the road, creased one sheet at a time
  • Paper clothing, a folded set with comb, cloth and shoes, so that nobody arrives at the crossing in rags
  • Treasury money, the bundle tradition sends with a person to settle what was borrowed at birth
  • A folded silver lotus, creased petal by petal from silver rather than white paper, and set on the table as a seat
