One name on the seat, and for that day the rite is read to that one person. The rungs above write four names and eight onto one seat the same way, and nothing else about the day is different.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

How the table is laid, and what is burned

You are asked, in a private form, for each name as it should be written, whatever birth details you hold, and your own name and city, because the table has to know who laid it.

Each name is brushed onto the paper tablet by hand, and a petition is written naming you as the one offering and them as the ones being called.

On the day the tablets are set in the rows, the table is laid, and the names are read aloud one at a time before the Officer of Earth, who on this day of the year is held to remit old faults.

When the incense has burned down, blocks are cast to ask whether the meal is finished, and only then are the clothing paper, the silver and the tablets burned through at the temple furnace.

THE ALTAR TABLE

What is laid out on the day.

A bowl of white rice with a stick of incense standing in itEvery dish on this table gets its own stick pushed into it, because a bowl without one is only food sitting out, and nobody arriving knows it was meant for them.
A basin of clean water, a towel, a comb and soapSet out first, so anyone who has walked a long road can wash and set themselves right before being asked to sit down.
Clothing paperPrinted with cloth, thread, combs and shoes, and burned before the food is offered so that nobody comes to the table in rags.
Seasonal fruit, uncutNever banana, plum or pear — said one after another their names sound like asking someone to come in and stay, and this table is set for one day only.
Canned and dry provisions stacked into a towerRice, noodles and food that keeps, because for many at this table the road does not end at our door.
Silver paper, folded by handSilver is the money of the dead and gold is for the deities, and the two are never folded into the same pile.
A lamp left burning at the edge of the tableIt is lit for the ones with no family to call them by name, so they can find the way in.

On the day, if you want to mark it where you are, cook a little more than you need and leave one seat at your table empty. Some people say the names once, aloud, oldest first, and then let the evening go quiet. None of this is required, and nothing at the altar depends on it.

PREPARED FOR THE RITE

Clothing paper — bundles printed with cloth, thread, combs and shoes, burned before the food so that nobody comes to the table in rags
Silver paper folded into ingots by hand — creased and tied one sheet at a time, never run through in a stack
A folded paper lotus — around a hundred sheets to a flower, folded petal by petal
A universal-rite flag brushed with your surname, planted at the edge of the table where it can be seen from a distance
Gold paper for the Officer of Earth — the courtesy paid upward before anything at all is set out for the table

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

What comes back from the seventh month

What comes back is in writing: the names exactly as they were brushed onto the tablet, the day the rite was kept, and what was laid out and burned. The rice, the clothing paper and the tablet with your names on it all go into the temple furnace together, so only the writing comes home. No photograph comes back from this rite.

The writing comes back within about seven days of the ceremony date, by email or on WhatsApp, whichever you asked for. The seventh month is the heaviest season we keep, and tablets are written and burned in the order they arrive, so a quiet week on your end is not a missed one. The ceremony date and the day the names close are both set before this rite opens, and neither moves once you have paid.

One decision before you order, and only one: whether the tablet is written for one name, for four, or for eight. Everything below is asked afterward, in a private form.
Your full name, as you would sign it.
Your own birth date, the time if you know it, and the city you were born in. The time can be left blank, and nothing is invented to fill it.
The name this is offered for, written as it should be read aloud — the name they were called at home, not the one on the paperwork. This one is optional.
Their birth date and birthplace, if you hold them. Unsure is a normal answer here, and the tablet is written without them.
Where the writing should go: an email address, or a WhatsApp number with the country code in front. Keep your own date of birth to hand as well, because it is what opens the file that arrives by email.
