ALTAR WISH · THE YEAR AHEAD
Tai Sui Protection: settling your name with the year’s governor
Every lunar year has a Tai Sui, the star-official said to govern that year. When a birth sign sits uneasily with the year, Taiwanese families 安太歲: they place a name with the Tai Sui and ask for a steadier passage. Altar Wish prepares that observance in Taiwan in your name, as a single placement, paired with a guardian light, or as a household arrangement for three to eight people. This guide explains each one and what comes back.

See Tai Sui ProtectionWhat Tai Sui is
The Ministry of Education dictionary gives 太歲 two senses, and both matter here. It is an old astronomical term, a counter-star that ancient calendar makers set running opposite Jupiter to count the years, and it is the name of the deity that folk belief holds presides over each year, whose direction you do not disturb by digging or building. Folk practice adds a personal rule: if your own birth sign sits uneasily with the year, you go early and settle your name with the Tai Sui. That settling is 安太歲, the observance this guide is about.
Which birth signs are said to be affected changes with the year. Almanacs publish the list, and the lists do not always agree, so look at the current year rather than remembering an old one. Altar Wish does not ask you to work this out. The Tai Sui offerings ask which zodiac year you were born in and which plan you want, and the house prepares the placement for the name you give. The observance belongs to the wider tradition of the bright lamp, 光明燈, which the Ministry of the Interior describes together with the Tai Sui lamp.

Three ways the house arranges it
Tai Sui Protection is the plain form: a fixed annual Tai Sui observance for one named person. Tai Sui + Guardian Light adds a 光明燈 for the same annual term and sells the two as a single purchase; the house describes it as two named observances in one order, and says to choose the plain form when the extra light is not wanted. Household Tai Sui is for three to eight people in one household, priced per person. A household of two places two individual orders, because the catalog rule is that fewer than three people use the individual product.
One thing none of the three includes is the year-end thanks. 謝太歲, Tai Sui Thanksgiving, is the custom of returning at the close of the year to thank the Tai Sui for the passage. The catalog lists it as a separate, optional offering that is not included in a Tai Sui order, and says so where it matters, so nobody discovers in the twelfth month that they bought half of a tradition. Choose it later, if the year has earned it.
| Offering | Who it names | What the order holds |
|---|---|---|
| Tai Sui Protection (安太歲) | One named person | A fixed annual Tai Sui observance; year-end thanksgiving is separate |
| Tai Sui + Guardian Light (太歲+光明雙燈) | One named person | Tai Sui protection and a guardian light for the same annual term, in one purchase |
| Household Tai Sui (全家安太歲) | Three to eight people in one household | One household observance priced per person; fewer than three use the individual offering |
What the intake asks
Before checkout you answer two questions: the zodiac year of the person the placement is for, and which plan. After payment the intake asks for your full name and your structured birth details, meaning the date, whether it is a solar or lunar date, the hour if known, and the birthplace if you want to include it. If the observance is for someone else, “Who is this for?” takes their name and their birth details. For Household Tai Sui you say how many people, three to eight, which zodiac signs are represented among them, and then list each household member’s details in one field.
Then delivery. You choose email or WhatsApp for the completion record and give the date of birth that will open the encrypted PDF, as eight digits in YYYYMMDD form. Two courtesies apply to everyone else you name. Submit another person’s details only where the service permits it and you have their consent, and keep those details inside the order and intake flow rather than in ordinary email. Your private order page lets you correct answers while the form remains open.
Timing and the annual term
Tai Sui is a fixed annual observance, and the offering page carries the current placement period for the year in question; look there rather than here, because this guide does not change when the year does. The guardian light sold on its own follows the house’s annual lamp term, which runs from the fifteenth of the first lunar month to the fifteenth of the twelfth, with one price for the whole period and no proration by day. Inside the paired offering, the light runs for the same annual term as the Tai Sui observance.
The preparation time listed for each Tai Sui offering is seven days, counted from the moment the required details are complete, and that is when the completion record is due. The year-end thanksgiving, when you want it, is its own order with its own page. A Tai Sui order covers one annual term; next year’s Tai Sui is next year’s decision, made with next year’s almanac.
What comes back, and what it is not
When the observance has been set, you receive a private completion record for the Tai Sui arrangement you chose, within the preparation time shown on the offering page. By email it is an encrypted PDF reached through a secure link; the PDF itself is not sent through WhatsApp. Your order details and the names you gave stay within the secure order flow.
What the house will not do is promise you a quiet year. Tai Sui Protection is a traditional religious observance made in good faith, a formal expression of prayer and respect; it does not promise a specific life result and it is not medical, legal or financial advice. The refund rules follow from that. If you never submit your intake, we remind you after thirty days and cancel with a full refund after ninety. Once the observance has been prepared or performed, a change of mind does not by itself create a refund. If something was not supplied as described, contact us with your order number.
Common questions
Which zodiac signs clash with Tai Sui this year?
Almanacs publish the signs concerned for each year, and the lists differ a little between almanacs. Altar Wish does not publish a list here; the offering asks which zodiac year the person was born in and shows the current placement period.
Can I arrange Tai Sui Protection for a parent who lives abroad?
Yes. Tai Sui Protection and Tai Sui + Guardian Light each take one named person, and the intake’s “Who is this for?” field names them. Submit another person’s details only with their consent.
What is the difference between Tai Sui Protection and Tai Sui + Guardian Light?
The paired offering adds a guardian light for the same annual term and is sold as one purchase containing two named observances. Choose plain Tai Sui Protection when the extra light is not wanted.
We are a household of two. Can we use Household Tai Sui?
No. Household Tai Sui requires three to eight people; fewer than three must use the individual offering. Place two individual orders instead.
Is year-end Tai Sui Thanksgiving included?
No. Thanking the Tai Sui at the close of the year is a separate, optional offering and is not included in any Tai Sui order.
Does Tai Sui Protection make the year go well?
It is a traditional observance made in good faith, not a promise. It does not promise a particular outcome and is not medical, legal or financial advice.
